Cement
Cement is absolutely crucial to the construction industry. It is the main component of concrete, which is the most-used building material in the world. When mixed with water and other materials, it forms a paste that hardens over time to create structures that are both strong and durable.
Characteristics
Limestone, clay and iron ore are heated to very high temperatures in kilns to produce Clinker, which is then ground into a very fine powder to produce cement.
Cement has strong binding properties and is available in varieties like Portland cement, blended cement, sulfate-resistant cement, white cement and low-heat cement. A key characteristic of cement is that it gains strength over time.
Applications
The most vital application of cement is in the production of concrete which is used for constructing buildings, bridges, roads, dams, tunnels, pavements and more. Mortar used for bonding bricks, stones and other masonry units also have cement as its base. Plastering, making drain and pipe joints, production of precast pipes and tiles as well as use in oil well drilling are some of the diverse applications of cement.
