Copper Slag
When copper is extracted from copper ore by smelting, it generates a waste material called slag. For every ton of copper production, roughly 2.2 tons is slag.
Characteristics
Copper Slag is mainly composed of iron silicate and contains varying degrees of iron and other elements. Its color ranges from black to a reddish brown, depending on its composition.
Applications
Copper Slag is used by the cement industry as a raw material during the production of Clinker due to its high iron content. It is also used for Abrasive Blasting such as sandblasting and removal of rust and paint from metal, concrete and wood. It is also used in Shipbuilding for preparation of hulls and other maritime equipment. In addition, Copper Slag is used for making roofing granules, manufacturing mineral wool, construction of landfills and as an aggregate replacement in concrete and asphalt mixtures. The construction industry uses it for surface cleaning and preparation of concrete and steel structures.
