Gypsum

Also known as hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSO4·2H2O), Gypsum is a soft mineral found in sedimentary rock formations.

Characteristics

It is a soft mineral which is moderately soluble in water. It is fire-resistant and does not burn. It also has excellent sound-absorbing properties. Gypsum has a transparent to milky white appearance but can also occur in shades of gray, brown and pink.

Applications

Gypsum finds wide applications in the construction industry as it the main component of drywalls and is used in Plaster of Paris to plaster walls and ceilings. In agriculture, it is used as a soil conditioner and fertilizer. Other uses of Gypsum include production of cement, dental plaster and pharmaceutical products, including tablets and orthopedic casts. Artists and sculptors use Gypsum for creating sculptures and carvings.
